Before the year ends, clear more than your desk - give yourself a break

Before the year ends, clear more than your desk - give yourself a break

A short, year-end reset can help you clear the mental clutter, protect your respite and return in January knowing where to start.

You can’t switch off properly if your January to-do list is still swimming around, half-formed in your head. By December, legal practice is often a race to get things off the desk. Your clients want matters progressed, deadlines feel closer and people start disappearing on leave.

You probably won’t finish everything before you go and you probably don’t need to. A short reset can help you work out what needs action now, what can wait and what your first week back needs to look like.

Got five minutes?

Skip to the quick, year-end reset free download below. If you have 20 minutes spare, work through these five areas first to finish the year with more control and return with a clearer starting point.

1. Stop trying to finish everything

By December, everything starts to feel ‘urgent’ or like it needs to be finished before you go on leave.

Be both kind and realistic with yourself. It does not.

Decide what genuinely needs action now and what can wait until January.

Focus on real deadlines, what clients need from you before the break and what someone else is waiting on. Progress or hand over anything genuinely urgent.

For everything else, note the next action and any key dates so you know exactly where to pick things up when you return.

That can make it easier to switch off over the break and get moving again in January.

2. Bank the evidence for your next career or salary conversation

Your role may have evolved without your title changing. You might be handling more complex matters, dealing directly with clients or making decisions you would have escalated a year ago.

Before you plan what comes next, take a moment to look properly at what has changed.

As Susan Pincus, National Career Strategist at the College of Law, suggests, the end of the year is an opportune time to step back and ask: What worked well, what are you proud of and what progress might be easy to miss?

“Think beyond major milestones. It may be a mindset shift, a new skill, greater confidence, a key learning, stronger client feedback or work you now do with less supervision. Capture those examples now while they are fresh,” Susan suggests.

“That evidence is incredibly useful for performance reviews, promotion discussions, salary conversations and future job applications. It also helps you see progress that can get lost when you’re constantly focused on the next deadline.”

With the latest Australian Legal Salary Survey data, you can use this market intel alongside your own examples to get a clearer view of where you sit.

3. Find the capability gap that keeps coming up

Think about the gaps that keep showing up in your day-to-day work. Where are you getting slowed down, needing more support or holding back from taking on certain work?

It might be an area of law where you need deeper expertise, a practical skill such as drafting or negotiation or a recurring process that could be improved with better systems, automation or AI.

Pick the one or two gaps that would make the biggest difference to your day-to-day practice. These are the areas worth keeping in mind when you plan your development and CPD for the year ahead.

If improving one capability would make you faster, more confident or able to take on better work, that is a useful place to start.

4. Make your CPD work harder

Do not just ask whether you have enough CPD points. Ask whether those points are helping you build the skills and knowledge you actually need.

Before the year ends, check what you have completed, what remains and whether you still have required categories to cover before your jurisdiction’s deadline.

Then look ahead. Use the gaps you identified above to guide your CPD choices, focusing on the areas that would make the biggest difference to your practice.

5. Pick three things for next year

Career planning doesn’t need to be complicated. Before you close the laptop on the year, choose:

  • One capability to build, such as deeper expertise in an area of law or a practical skill that would make you more confident.
  • One type of experience to seek out, such as different matters, greater client responsibility or exposure to another area of practice.
  • One way to work better, such as a process to streamline, technology to use more effectively or a recurring frustration to remove from your week.

Before you choose your next step, ask whether your current work is moving you closer to the career you want. If it is, what would help you keep building momentum? If it is not, choose one or two practical steps that would bring you closer.

That might mean booking a course, starting a career conversation, seeking different matters, exploring further postgraduate study or fixing a process that wastes time each week.

Finish with a clearer starting point

You probably won’t clear every matter before you finish for the year and you don’t need next year perfectly planned.

Give yourself permission to leave some things for January. What matters is getting the loose ends out of your head and into a place you can come back to.

Before you close the laptop, use the five-minute reset below. Capture what matters, choose your first steps and give yourself a better chance of taking a proper break.

TAKE THE 5-MINUTE YEAR-END REST
WITH YOU

A simple one-page prompt to help you wrap up the year, clear your head and work out what to pick up first in January.
